Frequently Asked Questions

About Matthew Wood's Herbalism Certification Online

Where should I start if I’m brand new to herbalism?

If you’re just getting started, we recommend Year One: Earthwise Herbalist Certification Program. It builds a strong foundation in herbal knowledge and practice. If you’d prefer to ease in, the Library + A–Z Subscription is a great place to explore videos, herbs, and traditional Western herbalism before committing to the full program.

How long does it take to complete each certificate level?

Each level is designed to take about one year. Months 6 and 12 are built in for rest, review, or submitting assignments. You can go at your own pace and take breaks as needed.

Are these herbal programs intended for personal enrichment, professional practice, or both?

Yes, both! Many students begin herbal studies for personal reasons—like supporting family wellness or making herbal remedies—and then continue toward becoming a registered herbalist. You can use this training to serve your community or build your own practice.

Can I speak with someone to help plan my learning path?

Definitely. If you’re unsure where to begin, we’re happy to help. Reach out anytime and we can guide you based on your experience and goals. Our email is hello@woodherbs.com.

Will I be a certified herbalist after completing these programs?

You’ll receive a certificate of completion showing the number of study hours. Herbalism is a self-regulated field in most places, so there’s no official license. Be sure to check your local laws to understand how you can practice herbalism in your area.

Are these certificates recognized by any herbalist associations or professional bodies?

Our programs follow the educational standards of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG). We encourage you to check with your chosen professional group to confirm whether they accept herbal certificates from the Matthew Wood Institute of Herbalism.

Are the classes video-based, written, or both?

Yes, the entire program is online. You’ll get access to pre-recorded video lessons, readings, and optional live Q&A sessions and study groups. Recordings are available within two business days if you can’t attend live.

Do I have lifetime access to the materials?

You’ll have access to your course content while enrolled in the program. Because we update and improve our materials regularly, access is time-based rather than lifetime. This helps us keep your learning experience current and interactive.
