An eye-opening class that's part history, part healing, and all heart.

Black Folk Herbalism highlights the rich history of Black folk medicine and the use of herbs for healing and conjuring. The class is an overview of the black experience as it relates to medicinal herbs, the historical political and social journey, legal constraints, and herbal recipes and magic for common and uncommon beliefs and traditions. “Monolithic” is not a word that describes the African American culture.
Students will:
  • be guided through the history of African Americans who were able to survive the brutality of slavery and Jim Crow while finding wholeness and balance under the cover of Nature
  • learn about the herbs that were used in the African American community to remedy the illnesses that plagued their lives.
  • receive an overview of the historical and political implications of the health conditions that arose as a result of their perilous lives, at the hands of their oppressors with a focus on Frederick Douglass and his conquering experience.
  • be directed to focus on the herbs used in the Southern region of the United States. We study the contributions of the great genius agronomist and spiritual teacher, George Washington Carver—including an appreciation of the lowly peanut.
  • be exposed to an in-depth look at the work of John Lee, including his categories of blood medicine, which have been very important to Matthew Wood.
