Skin Relief Bath Formula

Dec 9 / Alberto Carbo
I began my journey as a herbalist right around the same time that I began my journey as a father. My passion for self-help, natural remedies, people and plants led me to herbalism, and unexpectedly, fatherhood turned out to be one of the biggest motivations and affirmations to continue down the herbal path.

I now have 3 kids, and I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the herbal knowledge that repeatedly continues to support my family through all sorts of health concerns. If you’re a parent, then you know that situations can come up through all life stages, and every time, the herbs are there to help.

While coughs, colds and flus are likely the most frequent reasons for which I use herbs with my kids, skin conditions seem to be a close second, especially in the younger years. The following Skin Relief Formula has come in handy for diaper rash, random rashes, eczema and dry skin. It is gentle, soothing and helps to relieve itching.

You can use the Bath formula below as soon as you see the first signs of rash. If particularly bad, you can use this formula 1 X per day, up to 3 days in a row, take a 2 day break and repeat.

An herbal bath is a great way to administer herbal remedies to children because their integumentary system, or skin, is thin and very permeable so they easily and readily absorb and benefit from the herbs.

This Skin Relief formula can also be used effectively for adults as well as children who are already into their teen years.

Skin Relief Bath Formula

Ingredients:
  • 15 g. Calendula
  • 50 g. Marshmallow Root
  • 40 g. Oak Bark
  • 15 g. Goldenrod
  • 15 g. Rose petals
  • 15 g. Plantain leaf

Instructions:
  1. 6 TBSP in a 5 L pot
  2. Bring to a simmer and decoct (gentle simmer) for 20 minutes.
  3. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into another pot or bowl.
  4. Add to bath water.
  5. If using for a baby, you will not have as much water in the bath, and can likely use only 1.5 L of the prepared Bath. Allow the rest to cool, and place in the fridge for use the next day.
  6. If using for an adult, or a toddler, and implementing a full bath, use all 5 L (or use less if using for a hand/foot soak or sitz bath).
  7. You can also add epsom salts to the bath if you like.
